What to know
What to know
The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic television series produced by HBO. Pedro Pascal stars as Joel, a man tasked with smuggling the young and defiant Ella, played by Bella Ramsey, out of the quarantine zone and across the country. as Gabriel Luna stars as Tommy, Joel's younger brother a former soldier who clings to the hope of a better world.
Pascal became available to shoot the series after wrapping The Mandalorian’s second season. The actor was flooded with offers following the Star Wars series' success and will reportedly be earning $600, 000 per episode, making him one of the highest paid American television actors.
While The Last of Us is based on a video game – a first for HBO – Pascal didn’t want his portrayal of Joel to be an exact copy of the game's character. The actor allowed the characterization to be determined by the showrunners and created some healthy distance between the two depictions.Recurring castmates include Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, and Anna Torv as Tess. Taking on a more serious role than normal, comedian Nick Offerman plays Bill. Lamar Johnson and Keivonn Woodard portray the brothers Henry and Sam whose characters have had their backstory shifted from the original source material. Despite some story tweaks, the filmmakers remain true to the video game having meticulously recreated specific shots in live-action. The Last of Us was released on January 15th, 2023 on HBO Max.
